Brian B. Garrett

Brian B. Garrett is a Director in McLane Middleton’s Litigation Department and Chair of the firm’s Education Law Practice Group in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He focuses on the needs of independent day and boarding schools and provides comprehensive outside counsel services. His work involves students and families, employment, governance, school operations, investigations, misconduct response, policies, and training for boards, administrators, faculty, staff, and other school leaders.

Brian earned his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, an M.A. in Higher Education from Boston College, and a B.A. from Boston College. Before becoming an attorney, he worked as a program coordinator at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Graduate School of Education. His education and early professional experience provide direct context for a practice centered on the operational, employment, governance, and student-related issues faced by educational institutions.

Brian works with independent schools on complex matters affecting school communities and regularly provides training and workshops nationwide. His training topics include professional boundaries, mandated reporting, investigations into misconduct, and other issues unique to independent schools. He has extensive experience guiding investigations and institutional responses to allegations of sexual abuse and other sexual misconduct. Earlier legal roles included education and employment work at Schwartz Hannum and litigation at Sheppard Mullin.

Brian B. Garrett is admitted in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, several federal district courts, and the Second and Third Circuit Courts of Appeals. He has been recognized by Massachusetts Super Lawyers in the Schools and Education category and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire.
