Blas P. Arroyo is a senior counsel with Alston & Bird’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, bringing over 30 years of experience in intellectual property law. His practice focuses on patent litigation, including patent validity, infringement, and enforceability issues. Mr. Arroyo represents clients in high-stakes contested matters across diverse technical fields, advocating for their rights in federal courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and global patent offices.

Mr. Arroyo earned his Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University in 1981 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University, which he obtained in 1978. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in North Carolina. He is a seasoned trial lawyer, having represented clients in numerous trials before federal courts throughout the United States and ITC Section 337 Investigations involving patent and antitrust issues.

In addition to his trial experience, Mr. Arroyo is deeply engaged in appellate advocacy, handling numerous appeals to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also experienced in inter-part matters before the USPTO’s Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, guiding clients through complex intellectual property (IP) disputes. Beyond the U.S., he has coordinated global contested proceedings involving patent rights, including opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office and other patents worldwide.

Mr. Arroyo has been recognized for his exceptional legal work with honors, including being included in The Best Lawyers in America in 2012 and the title of “Lawyer of the Year” in patent litigation for Charlotte in 2017. He is a member of esteemed organizations such as the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Federal Circuit Bar Association.
