Ben earned a BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Yale University. He later received a JD from Yale Law School. This academic background provided a strong foundation in analytical thinking, legal reasoning, and problem-solving. His education helped prepare him for a career handling complex legal questions and serving in positions of substantial responsibility.
Ben’s legal experience includes serving as Deputy Solicitor General with the New York State Office of the Attorney General from 2007 to 2011. In that role, he worked on significant legal matters involving government interests and appellate advocacy. His experience in this position strengthened his ability to address challenging legal issues and contribute to important public-sector legal work.
Ben later joined the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board as an Administrative Judge from 2011 to 2014. He then served as Regional Director and Chief Administrative Judge at the Merit Systems Protection Board from 2014 to 2016. These roles involved overseeing administrative proceedings, evaluating legal disputes, and helping ensure fair and effective decision-making within the federal employment system.
Benjamin Noah Gutman has continued to serve in senior government legal positions, including Solicitor General and later Deputy Attorney General of Oregon. His career reflects extensive experience in appellate practice, public law, administrative adjudication, and government leadership.
