Benjamin (Ben) M. McGrey

Benjamin (Ben) M. McGrey is an attorney in Butler Snow’s Charleston office and a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation group. Before joining the firm, he served as Assistant Deputy Solicitor General in the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, where he led appellate and civil litigation efforts, drafted briefs, presented oral arguments, and advised state officials on significant legal and policy matters. McGrey brings that government advocacy experience to business and commercial disputes.

McGrey earned a B.A. in Political Science and Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina in 2019, an M.A. in International Relations from Regent’s University – London in 2020, and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2024. In law school, he received a CALI Award in Legislative Processes, served as a journal managing editor, and held leadership in the Federalist Society.

At the Attorney General’s Office, McGrey worked on appellate and civil litigation, multi-state amicus briefs, and claims under the Administrative Procedure Act. During law school, he also clerked with the U.S. House Committee on Government Oversight & Reform, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and Governor Henry McMaster. These roles provided experience with public law, investigations, legislative issues, appellate advocacy, and the preparation of written positions on significant legal questions.

Benjamin (Ben) M. McGrey was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 2024 and is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina and the Fourth and D.C. Circuits. His background combines commercial litigation with substantial government and appellate experience. By applying strong research, briefing, and oral-advocacy skills, he helps develop litigation strategy and address complex legal issues for clients facing business disputes and other civil matters.
