Arthur K. Shaffer

Arthur K. Shaffer is a Shareholder at McDowell Rice Smith & Buchanan, P.C., where he leads the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice. For over two decades, Mr. Shaffer has helped companies of all sizes protect and manage their valuable intellectual property. His work includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, trade dress, and licensing agreements. He also handles legal issues tied to computer law, including the CFAA and DMCA, and represents clients in complex IP litigation. His clients range from Fortune 500 companies to startups, and his knowledge covers fields such as software, mechanical systems, and medical technologies.

Mr. Shaffer earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2001. He also holds a B.S. in Physics from Kansas State University, which he received in 1993.

With his background in engineering and physics, Mr. Shaffer brings a unique perspective to IP law. Before becoming a lawyer, he worked as a physicist and controls engineer on major technology projects, including work on the control systems for the Hong Kong airport. This technical experience gives him deep insight into the industries he serves.
