About
Alex D. Ivan is a shareholder with Kennedy & Graven, Chartered whose practice includes civil litigation, litigation, and school law. He advises schools on U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights complaints, special education, data practices, and general education-law matters. A major part of his work involves defending schools in civil litigation and helping districts prevent and respond to special education complaints, combining dispute resolution with ongoing counseling for public education clients.
Ivan earned a J.D. from Arizona State University, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, an M.Ed. from Arizona State University, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, and a B.A. summa cum laude from Baylor University, where he studied economics and political science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His legal and education training provides a strong foundation for representing schools in disputes involving student rights, special education obligations, civil rights, and institutional decision-making.
Ivan practiced in Arizona with a firm representing more than forty public school districts before joining Kennedy & Graven. He previously worked as a teacher and in the Arizona Department of Education’s Special Education Dispute Resolution Unit. That background gives him direct experience with schools from instructional, administrative, regulatory, and legal perspectives. His litigation practice uses that experience to defend school districts while advising them on processes designed to reduce disputes and respond effectively when complaints arise.
Alex D. Ivan is admitted in Minnesota, Arizona, several tribal courts, and multiple federal courts of appeals and district courts. He belongs to professional groups that include the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association and the National School Boards Association Council of School Attorneys. His civil litigation work is a central part of his practice, while school law remains a defining focus. He represents public education clients in contested matters and complex regulatory issues.
