Alex Butterman

Alex Butterman is a partner in the intellectual property practice at Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig in Leesburg, Virginia. He focuses on trademark prosecution and counseling. Since 1995, he has helped foreign and domestic businesses protect, maintain, and enforce trademarks before the USPTO and trademark offices worldwide.

Alex earned a B.A. in Psychology from Lehigh University. He later earned his Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law. His education prepared him for a focused legal career in intellectual property, trademark disputes, enforcement, prosecution, counseling, and other matters tied to brand protection.

Alex represents clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and works with foreign associates around the world. His experience includes trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, copyright and trademark disputes, internet and domain disputes, eCommerce matters, defamation, and litigation involving business and technology clients.

Alex has handled many Trademark Trial and Appeal Board matters. He has examined, searched, counseled, filed, prosecuted, maintained, and enforced several thousand trademarks and service marks. He has also served as attorney of record in more than 100 TTAB cases, with many successful results or settlements.

Alex has earned several awards and honors. He was recognized in the World Trademark Review 1000 for 2024 through 2026. He received the NIOSH Bullard-Sherwood Research to Practice Award in 2023, was named a Global Intellectual Property Leader in 2022, and received Senior Counsel of the Year at DBL in 2020.

Alex is admitted in the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. He is involved with the International Trademark Association and has served on several committees since 2006. His work includes anti-counterfeiting, enforcement, emerging issues, law firm membership, and online reference materials.
