About
Al Hofeld, Jr. is the founder and principal attorney of a Chicago civil rights litigation practice. His civil rights practice represents people whose constitutional rights have allegedly been violated, with particular attention to children, people in custody, and other vulnerable individuals. He handles police misconduct, excessive force, unlawful raids, and discriminatory treatment. He brings individual lawsuits and class actions in state and federal courts.
Al earned a B.A. in Economics from Reed College in 1990, followed by a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1994. He received his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in 2000. As a student, he held public interest fellowships, including the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship, and worked on cases involving claims of police torture in Chicago.
After law school, Al worked through an Equal Justice Works Fellowship on community legal and organizing projects that helped establish the South Side Community Federal Credit Union. He founded his civil rights litigation practice in 2008 after working at a Chicago consumer rights law firm. His cases have addressed wrongful police raids involving children, officers pointing firearms at children, police shootings, and claims of abuse in schools. He prepares these matters for litigation and trial.
Al Hofeld, Jr. received Northwestern University School of Law’s Young Alumni Public Interest Award in 2007. His professional work combines civil rights litigation with a history of community advocacy. He is admitted in Illinois and Wisconsin and to several federal courts, including the Seventh Circuit. By pursuing individual claims and cases involving wider patterns of misconduct, he seeks meaningful remedies for people harmed by abuses of official power.
