Aaron Hawbaker is a seasoned attorney with more than twenty years of legal experience and a strong record of public service. As the supervising attorney at the Waterloo Adult Public Defender Office, he has dedicated his career to upholding fairness in the justice system and ensuring that every individual receives quality representation under the law.
Aaron earned his B.A. in Political Science/Communications from the University of Northern Iowa in 1991, where he also participated in debate. He continued his education at the University of Iowa College of Law, earning his J.D. in 1994. His academic background in political science and communications provided a foundation for his analytical reasoning, persuasive advocacy, and leadership within Iowa’s legal community.
After beginning his career in private practice, Aaron served as an attorney in the State of Iowa starting in 2004. Over the course of more than two decades, he has built an extensive background in criminal defense and public law, consistently demonstrating a deep respect for ethical legal practice. His leadership extends to professional organizations where he serves as President of the Black Hawk County Criminal Defense Bar and President of the Public Defenders Association of Iowa. He is also active with the Iowa Bar Association, Iowa Association for Justice, and the National Association for Public Defense, contributing to professional development and statewide legal standards.
As the 4th Ward City Council Member for Cedar Falls, Aaron continues his dedication to civic improvement and responsible governance. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to service, collaboration, and integrity. Throughout his distinguished career, Aaron Hawbaker has earned recognition for his steadfast leadership, advancing both the legal profession and the community through fairness, diligence, and principled advocacy.
