San Mateo County Private Defender

San Mateo County Private Defender Program is a managed assigned counsel program administered by the San Mateo County Bar Association. Established in 1969, the program provides court-appointed representation at public expense to financially eligible people in San Mateo County. Its panel attorneys handle felony and misdemeanor charges, juvenile delinquency and dependency proceedings, civil commitment matters, and other cases requiring appointed counsel. The program operates from offices in Redwood City and San Mateo and works to protect clients’ constitutional and statutory rights.

San Mateo County Private Defender Program uses a client-centered, holistic approach supported by centralized case management, attorney oversight, training, and quality review. After the court appoints the program, an experienced private attorney is assigned to the client’s case. Panel lawyers work with clients to assess the facts, explain available options, and determine an appropriate strategy. Representation may include negotiated resolutions, diversion opportunities, motion practice, appellate work, or jury trials, depending on the client’s circumstances and legal needs.

San Mateo County Private Defender Program provides criminal defense, juvenile representation, civil commitment advocacy, post-conviction assistance, record-clearing services, and representation in specialty courts. Its attorneys receive support from investigators, social workers, paralegals, criminal immigration professionals, client advocates, legal researchers, expert witnesses, and other specialists. These resources help attorneys examine evidence, address immigration consequences, support clients facing housing or substance-use challenges, and prepare comprehensive defenses for cases ranging from lower-level misdemeanors to the most serious felony allegations.

San Mateo County Private Defender Program is overseen by a 15-member board and supported by an experienced management and administrative team. The program has received recognition from the American Bar Association and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. During fiscal year 2024-2025, it accepted appointments in more than 21,000 cases and participated in more than 87 jury trials. By combining skilled private counsel with coordinated support services, the program provides vigorous advocacy while addressing the broader challenges that can affect clients and their families.
